Founded in the 1880s around Tampa’s cigar industry, Ybor City is one of the region’s most distinctive urban neighborhoods and a National Historic Landmark District. Seventh Avenue’s brick streets, ornate historic buildings, balconies, cafés and nightlife can bring a touch of New Orleans atmosphere to mind, but Ybor’s Cuban, Spanish and Italian heritage gives the district a story entirely its own. The roaming chickens and colorful roosters are another unmistakable part of the local character.

Dante’s quick take: Ybor is not one uniform experience. The Seventh Avenue entertainment corridor, quieter residential blocks, loft conversions and the edges closest to Gasworx each have a different daily rhythm. Visit in the morning, evening and on a weekend before deciding which pocket fits you.
